You can pay the full amount upfront, split it 50% upfront and 50% before final delivery, or pay everything only after the project is completed. Paying fully upfront or the 50/50 split can both be arranged without a formal contract, since payment is already secured before the work is finished. Paying everything only after completion requires a signed contract, since no payment is made until the project is fully delivered.
